Dog Allergies and their Causes

Trying to determine the root cause to any allergy can be one of the most troublesome and headache-inducing tasks that an owner will ever undertake.  If you have witnessed your dog sneezing, rubbing, scratching and fidgeting more than usual, then you know that your dog is probably suffering from dog allergies.  Dog allergies often look a whole lot like human allergies, with there being a wide range of symptoms such as itchy eyes and itchy skin, runny noses and discomfort.  Just as with human allergies, dog allergies can be mildly irritating to downright deathly.

What Causes Dog Allergies?

If your dog has suddenly developed some form of dog allergies, the first place to look is at their food.  It is likely that the food that you are feeding your dog is causing the dog allergies.  If you have just recently switched to a different kind of food, then the presumption that the food is the problem is obvious.  Do be aware, however, that it can take time for dog allergies to develop, so the food that you are already feeding your dog may have slowly been building up to the allergic reaction that you are now witnessing.

Airborne particles such as mold, dust and pollen can also cause dog allergies, and so can human hair.  Make sure you vacuum and sweep and keep your home as clean as possible so that you can keep your dog’s allergies at bay.

How can I Treat Dog Allergies?

The first thing to do is to switch up your dog’s diet.  Opt for a bland and natural kind of food, and see if that has any effect on your dog.  Boiled chicken and plain brown rice is the best plain and simple meal to make for your dog, though there are other commercially made formulas that you can choose from if you don’t have the time or finances for boiled chicken and rice.

If that doesn’t solve the dog allergies in your household, then you may want to take your dog into the veterinarian and see if any sort of allergy testing can be done.  Your vet will be able to go through the different elements of your dog’s lifestyle, as well as medications, and help you determine the root cause of the dog allergies.  Your veterinarian may also be able to refer you to a “dog allergies specialist”, or a doggie dermatologist who can further narrow down the cause of you dog’s allergic reactions.

[...] Dog allergies all tend to have similar symptoms, all of which involves the scratching and pawing and chewing of some part of the body.  The part of the body that is usually being scratched and chewed is related to his area of allergy.  If a dog is having a dog food allergy, it may be the face that is being pawed, or your dog may be chewing at his abdominal area.  As a result of the chewing, licking and scratching, dog skin problems may also arise due to a dog food allergy.
